April 2023 Grand Rounds Webinar: Pediatric and Adolescent Long-Covid: An Epidemic in our Midst

Long-Covid is likely already at epidemic proportions, but is vastly underrecognized and goes predominantly untreated.  There is high morbidity for many, with all aspects of life disrupted during a critical, developmental timeframe.   Further, patients experience high levels of dismissal from care, medical gaslighting, substandard treatment, and other barriers to recovery.  This presentation will review the clinical features of long-Covid in young people and highlight the experiences and lessons learned in clinical practice thus far.  Dr. Miller will review each of the most common primary complaints, discuss the strategies for care utilized at the Rainbow LC Recovery clinic for those complaints, and highlight the role that integrative thinking and care strategies are playing with this population.

Objectives:

  • Recognize the prevalence and impact of long-Covid in the pediatric population.
  • Identify the most common presenting complaints and how to identify individuals who may have long-Covid.
  • Consider treatment strategies that prioritize the use of both western mainstream medicine and holistic and integrative care options.

Speaker: David Miller, MD, LAc
Dr. Miller has been working collaboratively with Dr. Amy Edwards of Infectious Disease and others at UH Rainbow, together treating a growing population of more than 150 young people suffering from Long-Covid.  The Rainbow Pediatric Long-Covid Recovery Clinic opened in 2021, and serves individuals in Ohio and beyond.  It is one of only a handful of such clinics in the U.S.  Dr. Miller directs the inclusion of integrative medicine techniques into the care plans for patients.  The clinic is working to continually determine the most effective, most natural supports for all patients, and treats with a Biopsychosocial, Whole Health, philosophy.
